Controversial cloth bags. Only in London...

sainsb_468x536 This story made me smile because it just oozes London-ness. A cloth shopping bag designed by Anya Hindmarch for (my fave British) grocery chain Sainsbury's turns into an instant must-have item. It sells out immediately and then gets slammed by the media for being unethically made at a sweat shop in China, at which point the PR rep from Sain's points out that whole idea was to make something environmentally friendly simultaneously hip. All our favourite causes are clashing, it seems. Anyway these bags could and should have been made differently, but I still got a kick out of this consumer & media frenzy...

Thoughts from the Londoners? Did any of you ladies indulge in one of these bags? I might have, if it didn't involving queuing up at 4am! Bon weekend, all. :)

That seems like a commentary on our times. What are the chances of designing a bag that is a) affordable, b) trendy, c) environmentally friendly and d) made by well-paid people living under an approved form of government? If we accept and embrace globalization, we must understand the tradeoffs ... no matter how simple the product.

Yeah, you know me, always getting up early to queue up outside Sainsbury's in Camden Town to buy a bag that is worth nothing except the value created by the media and celebrities like Keira Knightly who would never dream of going anywhere near a Sainsbury's in the first place. They are selling on ebay for upwards of £250 now. Mentalists. Make way for the Kate Moss Topshop explosion - they are handing out color-coded wristbands in the queue (festival style, they say) so that young Topshop junkies don't murder each other while stampeding into Topshop for poorly made pseudo-fashion made by their favorite cokehead. Obviously I'll be there.

Have to admit, the principle behind it is good and it's a pretty darn cute shopping bag (and lord knows you need a good sturdy one to shlep groceries in London), but the queueing and the eBay ridiculousness... way over the top, even by London standards!

Hey Jules,

Just read through a couple of your past entries. Sounds like work is going well! I can relate to just about everything you have to say about work and particularly enjoyed your bathroom story. We too deal with the ally mcbeal-style facilities... such is life at a small agency.

When's the wedding?

July 1 is the big day! We figure, we'll always have our anniversary off of work. ;)
